We all know that stress can be bad news for our skin, with modern living and demanding lifestyles impacting on the health of the skin.
Late nights, tense situations and testing weeks can all leave us looking a little less like our best selves. But do we really know exactly how stress manifests in our complexion?
To allow us to tackle the signs of stress on the skin effectively, we’re delving into the issue of cortisol and explaining how you can use skincare to minimise the visible effects it may have on your face.
What is stress?
Firstly, it’s important to understand exactly what stress is. When the body detects this emotion, it can react in multiple ways. The body will signal the onset of stress to the brain, which then communicates through the nervous system whether to take ‘flight’ or ‘fight.’ Cortisol is the body’s main stress hormone. It’s produced by the adrenal glands when stress is detected in the body, and it’s this hormone that fuels our instincts when we detect stress.
For example, cortisol can work to regulate blood pressure, increase blood sugar, control the sleep cycle, and boost energy to allow us to deal with a stressful situation.
What does stress do to our skin?
Noella Gabriel, ELEMIS Co-Founder, fills us in, “The skin, like the brain, is a living organ, and the effects of stress on its functioning are severe. In fact, studies indicate that stress causes a decline in skin barrier function.* The prolonged release of stress hormones in the skin causes a decrease of Hyaluronic Acid production, contributing to the breakdown of collagen and overall cellular ageing. Loss of collagen, elastin and depleted Hyaluronic Acid share a common side effect: an increase in fine lines and wrinkles.”
